Diversity in complexion products is an incredibly important issue that has been fought for far too long. It is essential that all people can find the right products to suit their individual needs and feel represented in the beauty industry. Thankfully and rightfully, more and more brands are recognizing this importance and dedicating themselves to providing an array of options for people of all complexions to be able to find their foundation color match.
It is a heartening development that should be celebrated and encouraged, and we’re here to highlight 4 brands that cater specifically to tan, olive, brown and deep skin tones!
Black Opal - Niko Mouyiaris and Dr. Cheryl Burgess are true pioneers in the beauty industry! In 1994 they worked together to provide better product options for Black women in the beauty space when there was a lack of them available. 2019 saw now CEO Desiree Rogers and President Cheryl Mayberry-McKissack buy Black Opal, making the company Black and woman-owned for the first time. All of their products are carefully crafted to help reduce hyperpigmentation, control oiliness, and minimize the appearance of enlarged pores. They understand the unique skin care needs of Black and brown consumers and are committed to providing them with the best possible solutions.
All Shades Matter - An Australian brand co-founded by Tali and Shaanti, is built on the notion of supplying an affordable, simple, and polished everyday foundation that caters to a broad range of skin tones, specifically, darker tones. It's amazing to see how Tali and Shaanti's experiences led to the creation of All Shades Matter cosmetics. It's so important for everyone to feel represented in the beauty industry and it's wonderful to see two women of color creating a product line that celebrates diversity and inclusion. They’ve started with the brand 4 shades they feel are the shades that are most in demand in the market, with plans to expand and fill the gaps! We love that they sell sample sizes of all shades (individually and as bundles) so you can try before you commit to the full size.
Black Up - Founded in 1999 by an African makeup artist Fabrice Mahabo, Black Up was the first French luxury beauty brand dedicated to women of color. Mr Mahabo no longer helms the company, but since his departure they have developed a strong research and development/innovation team of 6 makeup artists, all of whom are black and are responsible for providing insights, trends, predictions, etc. on products, usage, and more. It offers a wide range of shades and formulas to suit all skin types and answers the specific needs of tan to darker skin tones.
Iman Cosmetics - Launched in 1994, IMAN Cosmetics is designed for African American, Asian, Latina and multicultural women. Iman, founder, CEO, and one of the most legendary supermodels and beauty icons of the 70’s & 80’s, had long been frustrated by the paucity of products for black skin. Products are formulated to match the unique undertones of dark skin, and also offer a variety of shades to choose from. Not surprisingly, foundation, a challenging category for many women of color, accounts for 75 percent of Iman Cosmetics overall sales.
