Name: Simone
Age: 29
Skin Type: Combination
Skin Concerns: Oily T zone- certain products can make me look like an oil slick.
Shade: 5.1
Have you bought Luminous Silk before, why/why not? I haven’t bought Luminous Silk before, I tried it about 5 years ago and didn't think it lived up to the hype it was getting. I was working on beauty counters at that time with so many amazing products right at my fingertips and I thought other foundations I was trying worked better for my skin.
Were you happy with the foundation after initial application? I thought it melted into my skin really well and the powder products I put over the top blended nicely and didn't look muddy on my skin.
What did you think about your shade match/the shades in the range? I think the shade I wore (5.1) worked well for my skin and matched well with the rest of my chest and body.
How did you think it wore on you? I could see that my pores were so much more noticeable, I don't normally use a primer ( I know, a sin) but if I were to try this again I would definitely need one. It also melted around my nose and it made the area feel really oily to the touch.
Would you wear this again, why/why not? Considering I had this foundation on since 6:30 am it wore pretty well - I’m impressed. However, if I were to wear this again I would need to invest in a pore filling primer and I'm not sure it's worth it when my other go-to foundations last just as well if not better without a primer.
Name: Victoria
Age: 41
Skin Type: Combination (acne prone by dry from Retinol use)
Skin Concerns:
Shade: 5.5
Have you bought Luminous Silk before, why/why not? Yes, I purchased this 15 years ago when it first came out because of the hype. Back then, I had more oily/acne skin so it did not last on my face. I also remember it being a very pink based range, so I had to purchase 2 shades to get a colour match. I never purchased it again as it was quite expensive and it didn’t suit my skin type.
Were you happy with the foundation after initial application? Yes! It glided on my face with a good coverage. Easy to blend and made my skin look dewy.
What did you think about your shade match/the shades in the range? I matched my shade from Cle De Peau Concealer in Beige and received 5.5 as the closest shade. I have a warm - neutral undertone and so 5.5 was perfect in depth, but a little ashy/pink. I swatched the shades on either side of 5.5 and can see that the range leans more on the pink side.
How did you think it wore on you? I was impressed with the longevity this time around! Perhaps it’s because my skin is on the drier side with the retinol use but it did not seep into the lines around my eyes and mouth. My blemishes and scars were still covered at the end of the day.
Would you wear this again, why/why not? Although I really liked the foundation texture and formula, I prefer warmer based ranges as it suits my undertone better. While it's a solid foundation, I found myself wanting or expecting a little more from it. Would I purchase this again? probably not as there are too many products out there that I’d want to try. A foundation really has to make its mark these days to own a spot on my dresser and warrant re-purchasing.
Name: Rachel
Age: 41
Skin Type: Combination (very oily t-zone)
Skin Concerns: Oily t-zone and light rosacea
Shade: 3.75
Have you bought Luminous Silk before, why/why not? No. I’ve tried it in the past and found that it didn’t last as well as my other foundations.
Were you happy with the foundation after initial application? Yes, but I would have liked a little more coverage.
What did you think about your shade match/the shades in the range? It was perfect!
How did you think it wore on you? I was happy with how it wore throughout the day. More so than previous times I’ve tried it. One touch up with blotting films or some translucent powder would have taken me all the way through to the evening.
Would you wear this again, why/why not? Yes, but working in the industry, I just can’t justify the price to pay for a bottle of it. There are too many other gems that are at a more accessible price point.
Name: Ash
Age: 29
Skin Type: Combination
Skin Concerns: Hydration, Texture, Congestion
Shade: 4
Have you bought Luminous Silk before, why/why not? No I’ve never purchased a bottle but I’ve used it a few times over the years - samples, gifts, on other people etc. I’ve always thought it was a lovely foundation but didn’t feel it was worth the hype.
Were you happy with the foundation after initial application? I don’t prime day-to-day but I did today to give the foundation a good chance. A medium coverage, natural-yet-softly-radiant finish is right up my alley so after application I was very happy. I felt well covered but not caked. It was light on the skin and very easy to blend. I loved the smooth finish.
What did you think about your shade match/the shades in the range? Shade 4 is a good winter shade for me. I’ve struggled with getting the right shade in Luminous Silk in the past as I have a warm undertone and overall the shades in the range are quite neutral and cool, but this one worked well for where I’m at right now.
How did you think it wore on you? At the end of the day I was really pleased with the outcome. I had applied it at about 6am in the morning so by the end of the day I had some oils coming through in my T-zone and the foundation had separated a tiny bit, but overall it still looked great. If anything I felt more radiant than oily and quite like how it looked at the end of the day. I feel if I hadn’t primed it would be a hot mess.
Would you wear this again, why/why not? Yes I will wear this foundation again. I think if it’s in your budget it’s a lovely option but there are MANY foundations just as good (and dare I say BETTER) for half the price.
Name: Fleur
Age: 34
Skin Type: Combination (acne prone by dry from Retinoid use)
Skin Concerns: Hormonal acne (retinoid use controls oil but skin can flake), fine lines
Shade: 5
Have you bought Luminous Silk before, why/why not? I’ve never purchased a bottle of Luminous Silk. To me, the price point can’t be justified. How can a foundation be THAT GOOD? I’ve always heard great things about it, and I have tried it on a few times using the samples in the MMM labs, so I’m not going in totally blind.
Skin Prep: Vitamin C, Moisturiser, Wet N Wild Translucent Clarifying Powder in the t-zone, and then buffed Luminous Silk in with a dense foundation brush. I lightly powdered over my t-zone again once the foundation had set as well as I got oily by the end of the day.
Were you happy with the foundation after initial application? I loved it. It was very smooth and flawless and all my other products mingled well with it.
What did you think about your shade match/the shades in the range? I’m neutral-neutral cool so there are plenty of shades I could wear in this range. Shade 5 is my winter shade and is a pretty spot on match for my natural skin tone. My neck is a shade lighter than my face and body so I blended it down.
How did you think it wore on you? My nose was very oily at the end of the day, in the video I would see where it had broken down. I lean on my chin all day as well, but my chin has held up surprisingly well. You can see my red spots had lost coverage though. Overall, my skin looks really good and glowy and the staying power overall is actually really impressive for a natural-finish, self-setting foundation.
Would you wear this again, why/why not? I would definitely wear this again. But would I buy it? Maybe not. It smells like sunscreen from my childhood, so it feels odd to spend $100+ on a foundation that evokes that sort of memory. My all-time favourite NARS Foundation is at least $40 cheaper, so I'll keep repurchasing that.
