I take investigative journalism very seriously and all attempts are made to speak directly with sources – this blog is no different. In honour of Australian Mother’s Day, I reached out to the woman who made me the caffeine addicted woman I am today: my mum. She gave me all the notes on what she would love for Mother’s Day to help us procrastinators source some last minute gifts.
Makeup Lessons
Mum loves getting glammed up but she has very little confidence in doing it herself. She told me she’d LOVE a personal makeup class to teach her some nifty tricks. Many freelance makeup artists offer these sort of services at a one-on-one level or in groups – often with some products thrown in too!
Bath Salts (Not the drug)
Nothing hits harder than reading a book in a candlelit bath to unwind from the day. Mum loves an evening bath with bath salts – she regularly requests them for every Mothers Day, Christmas and birthday (though she made me promise not to tell you exactly how many birthdays she’s had)
If you’re in the market for a SUPER luxe bath salt gift, we love the two litre L’Objet Cote Maquis Bath Salts. If you’re looking for something a little more budget friendly while still giving a great gift, we love the Aery Aromatherapy Bath Salts Gift Set or one of the small business sellers you can find on Etsy!
Gift Sets
A struggle mum has is trying to pick out products – ya’ll know how over saturated the market is!! So she loves a gift pack where the pros have curated a collection of versatile products.
Lancome have a great Idole Mascara Set which not only has their great mascara, but also a liner AND eye-makeup remover. If your mum is all sorted for eye makeup, then Clarins has a huge range of skincare sets available – my mum specifically requested the
Double Serum & Extra Firming Collection Set.
Something for the Brows
As we age our brows tend to thin out and become more sparse meaning our mums often will need a little bit of help to fill them out a bit – especially if they over waxed them to oblivion in the 90s.
I’m addicted to the Glossier Brow Flick, and if your mum wants to amplify the brows she does have as well, you can get a Boy Brow + Brow Flick set too. The Brow Flick enables you to add hairlike strokes to naturally fill the gaps. As I always say with brow products – get a shade or two lighter than her actual brow colour. If her brows are grey, then a blond will work.
Foundation for Mature Skin
I’m not sure if it’s just because I work for a foundation matching service, but mum said she’d love a foundation for mature skin as a mother’s day gift, and who am I to disappoint her?
When shopping for foundation for mature skin, you want to look for something that has a light to medium coverage with a dewy or radiant finish. This will give her a natural glow without product falling into fine lines. Her and I both love The Ordinary Coverage Foundation (despite their labelling, I truly do consider this a medium coverage product) though if you want to spend a little more, I recommend Nars Sheer Glow or Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk. If you want to find your shade match in any of these products, you know what to do.
Although every mum is different, we hope that these gift ideas straight from the horse’s mouth help to guide you in the right direction – but please do not tell my mum I referred to her as a horse.
