Dua Lipa (archival Chanel)

The 2023 Met Gala witnessed the arrival of Dua Lipa, who made a statement in her 1992 archival Chanel gown. As one of the co-chairs for the Met Gala, the pop star donned a bridal-inspired gown from the haute couture fall-winter 1992 collection, previously worn by original 'super' Claudia Schiffer, a long-time muse of Lagerfeld. The ivory tweed dress featured black contrast stitching on the corseted top and hemline, which revealed a plunging neckline. However, it was Dua's choice of jewelry that took the look to a whole new level. She became the first celebrity to wear Tiffany & Co.'s new legendary diamond, set on the iconic Lucida Star necklace, which was a sight to behold.

Anne Hathaway (Versace)

Anne Hathaway stunned everyone in her strapless safety pin dress by Versace, designed in the style of Karl Lagerfeld, featuring white tweed, pearl accents, and camellia flower details.

Donatella Versace wanted Hathaway’s outfit to marry signature Versace and Chanel codes. “For Anne I wanted to create a gown to celebrate a conversation between Karl and Versace,” Versace told Vogue. “I remember listening to Gianni and Karl talking and laughing over dinner one evening and this dress reminds me of that moment. Karl celebrated women and craftsmanship. I learned so much from his work. The dress is a tribute to our shared ’90s experience—tweed, pearls and camellias mixed with safety pins, slashes, and a corset. Anne looks powerful, feminine, stunning and of course iconic. Exactly like Karl made women feel in his dresses.”

Jennie from BLACKPINK (archival Chanel)

As a cherished muse handpicked by Karl Lagerfeld himself for the Chanel house, Jennie graced the red carpet with her presence, paying homage to the late designer. Kim opted for a mini dress reinterpretation of look 164 from Lagerfeld's fall 1990 ready-to-wear collection, which was a perfect fit for her. The satin bustier dress featured a white camellia with a ribbon tie at the bodice, while a matching flower was pinned to her hair, completing the look. Jennie says,

"I'm wearing Chanel from the '90s runway. I'm so lucky to have the Chanel team recreate this look, the one that Karl did. I'm just so happy!"

Cardi B (Chenpeng Studio)

Cardi B turned heads in a jaw-dropping ballgown designed by Chenpeng Studio. The gown started with a classic white shirt collar and tie, and then progressed to a sleek black fitted bodice, adorned with silver studs. The full black skirt was a masterpiece with a quilted overlay, reminiscent of the iconic Chanel Boy Bag, and decorated with oversized sculptural rosettes. To complete the ensemble, Cardi wore matching black opera gloves, statement pearl and silver earrings, and a chic silver-toned bob with flipped ends, held in place by a leather hairband. Cardi said of Chanel,

Karl and the house of Chanel, you know every girl from the hood love a Chanel purse. So I feel like this is giving boy bag with the camellia roses.”

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Jared Leto & Doja Cat

Someone had to come as a cat, and we couldn't have picked better tributtes. Doja Cat and Jared Leto paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld's beloved cat, Choupette, in their Met Gala looks. Doja stunned in an Oscar de la Renta silver sequin dress with a hood and an open back, featuring a frothy feathered train that flows into a mermaid silhouette, while Leto stunned and confused the red carpet, hugging celebrities fully donned in the larger than life cat costume, before revealing himself to everyone's delight. Lagerfeld, who famously denounced fashion retrospectives as boring, would have loved both fashion moments.
